Mausoleum entombment was once reserved for royalty. The pyramids were built to house the remains of pharaohs and their families. Kings and queens of England are buried within the structure of Westminster Abbey.
Many American leaders and more than half of our presidents are entombed in mausoleums. Arlington National Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a mausoleum.
Part of Woodlawn Cemetery’s unique charm is the many family mausoleums that grace its grounds. These beautiful structures, built primarily in the late 19th and early 20th century, represent many of the families responsible for Toledo's growth and history.
Now your family has two ways to join the great mausoleum tradition at Woodlawn Cemetery:
Lakeside Mausoleum
Situated on a picturesque knoll overlooking the east lake, Woodlawn’s Lakeside Mausoleum is now a reality. The strong, monolithic design of Woodlawn's first public mausoleum is unique in Northwest Ohio. Lakeside Mausoleum’s small size and the use of fluted columns, Italian marble and granite give the structure the look and feel of the family mausoleums that are spotted throughout the cemetery.
Private, Family Mausoleums
Imagine the pride of having your own private, family mausoleum situated in the same setting as the personal mausoleums of many of Toledo's prominent families of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Your family mausoleum will be a unique work of architecture designed for the privacy of your family-- a perfect place to visit and quietly reflect upon the lives and achievements of your loved ones.

We use the expression “etched in stone” to describe something that’s unwavering, permanent and true. And isn’t that precisely what you want the memory of your loved one to be?
At Woodlawn Cemetery, we encourage the placement of monuments and markers to celebrate the lives and preserve the memories of the ones we’ve lost. Whether etched in granite, cast in bronze, or sculpted in marble, we can help you create a uniquely moving symbol of the life you wish to remember.
We maintain a library of monument and marker catalogs where you can begin to explore the many options open to you. Custom design elements that reflect the unique interests, beliefs and personality of the individual whose life you are commemorating are as unlimited as your imagination. You can choose to incorporate words, emblems, even photographs to personalize your tribute. Woodlawn Cemetery monuments and markers are all hand-crafted by American artisans. Memorial costs are based on size, material and complexity of design. To meet the needs of a wide range of families, we offer a wide range modestly priced options.

More and more members of our community are choosing cremation as an alternative to traditional casket burial — for reasons that are as varied as the individuals themselves. Some appreciate the simplicity and economy of cremation. Some choose cremation for spiritual or religious reasons. Others are attracted to cremation’s low impact on the environment.
At Woodlawn, we confer the same respect to cremation as we do traditional burial. And we believe that every life should be memorialized in some permanent way, regardless of the process selected to care for bodily remains.
To that end, we offer a range of remembrance options to those who choose cremation.

The natural beauty of Woodlawn's 160 rolling acres is unparalleled in northwest Ohio. Cemetery lots are available throughout the National Historic Site, on hillsides, in open areas or areas thick with majestic, tall trees. Lakeside lots appeal to those who wish to own property near water. Lots are pre-designated as "marker" or "monument" spaces. For future use, 47 acres remain completely undeveloped. Woodlawn offers lots in a variety of sizes, from single to family-size. Groups and organizations may purchase lots in sections as well. The cost of the lot includes the perpetual care of the space.
Anyone who owns property in the cemetery is considered a member of the Historic Woodlawn Cemetery Association. 10% of the purchase price of cemetery property is automatically invested in a Perpetual Care Fund, the proceeds of which are used to mow and trim and generally maintain the property forever. As a private, non-profit association, any profits from products or services provided by Woodlawn are re-invested in the maintenance, restoration and preservation of the cemetery, a National Historic Site.
